How to Fix a Leaking Tap

• By plumber4you Team

A dripping tap is the easiest plumbing repair to attempt yourself, and one of the most common calls we receive. Here is how the repair actually works.

Step 1: Shut off the water. Close the angle valve under the basin, or the main supply valve if there is no separate valve. Open the tap to release remaining pressure.

Step 2: Open the tap head. Remove the decorative cap, unscrew the retaining screw and lift off the handle. Use a spanner on the flats of the body, never on the chrome finish.

Step 3: Replace the washer or cartridge. Older taps use a rubber washer that hardens over time; modern quarter-turn taps use a ceramic cartridge. Take the old part to the shop to match the size exactly.

Step 4: Reassemble and test. Tighten firmly but do not over-torque. Open the valve slowly and check both the spout and the base for seepage.

When to stop and call a plumber: the tap body is corroded, the threads are stripped, water leaks from the wall behind the tap, or the drip returns within days. Those signs mean the fitting or the pipeline needs replacing.
